Cypress, CA (April 15, 2016) – Earth Friendly Products, the maker of ECOS™ environmentally friendly cleaning products and a leader in sustainable American business, will celebrate the grand opening of its flagship manufacturing facility in Cypress, California, on April 21, 2016, in conjunction with its celebration of Earth Day. The grand opening will showcase the sustainability and Zero Waste elements of the new facility, and the event itself will be carefully designed to limit carbon and waste impacts on the environment.

The grand opening will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, President and CEO of Earth Friendly Products, Cypress Mayor Mariellen Yarc, and Cypress Chamber President Ed Munson. A farm-to-table luncheon will feature sustainably produced, locally sourced ingredients, and speakers will include California State Assemblyman Matthew Debabneh and David Levine, co-founder and CEO of the American Sustainable Business Council. The grand opening will also include facility tours and an interactive farmer’s market experience.

During the grand opening, Steve Leonido-John from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will unveil the U.S. EPA’s Safer Choice logo on newly launched ECOS™ products and will speak about the company’s leadership in the Safer Choice labeling program. The coveted Safer Choice logo certifies that the products have been reviewed by EPA scientists, that they work well, and that they are made using the safest ingredients available. Earth Friendly Products makes 58 products that are certified Safer Choice, more than any other company. Because of the company’s commitment to the Safer Choice program, the EPA selected Earth Friendly Products as its Safer Choice Partner of the Year in 2015.

“The EPA is pleased to join Earth Friendly Products at the grand opening of its new sustainable manufacturing facility, just in time for Earth Day,” said Mr. Leonido-John. “The company’s longstanding commitment to green chemistry means many of its products carry the Safer Choice label, letting consumers know the ingredients are backed by EPA science as safer for people and the environment.”

The U.S. Zero Waste Business Council (USZWBC) will award its Zero Waste Platinum certification to the Cypress facility at the grand opening celebration, certifying that the facility diverts over 95% of its waste from landfills and incineration. Earth Friendly Products is the first company to have all five of its manufacturing facilities certified Platinum Zero Waste, the highest possible distinction from USZWBC.

During the grand opening ceremony, Earth Friendly Products will present a $10,000 check to The Wyland Foundation for its annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. The Challenge is a competition among cities nationwide to determine which is the most water-wise. Mayors ask their residents to pledge to conserve water and offer them rewards for positive conservation behavior, including environmentally friendly ECOS™cleaning products. Mayor Mariellen Yarc of the city of Cypress will join the presentation to accept the National Mayor’s Challenge on behalf of her city. The Wyland Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to preserve the world’s oceans, waterways, and marine life through education programs, public arts projects, and community events.

With its strong focus on sustainability and waste reduction, the grand opening will feature extensive use of recycled and reusable materials; fuel-efficient generators for off-the-grid power; local, organic foods; and living plant displays that will be replanted after the event—all designed to reduce the event’s total carbon footprint and environmental impact. Waste from the event will be diverted from landfills as much as possible through recycling and composting.

Earth Friendly Products’ recent move from Garden Grove to Cypress increased its manufacturing capacity in California by over 30% to accommodate the company’s strong growth, which is reflected in its quadrupling of sales over the last seven years. The new Cypress facility is one of the company’s five sustainable manufacturing facilities that are strategically located throughout the U.S. to minimize the company’s carbon footprint. This manufacturing distribution reduces shipping costs and enabled Earth Friendly Products to achieve carbon neutrality in 2013.
The new Cypress facility creates over 90 jobs in the state of California (and over 350 jobs nationally). Earth Friendly Products is a leader in corporate social responsibility, supporting local economies, including Southern California, by hiring locally, sourcing materials locally and paying one of the highest minimum wages in the nation, currently $17 an hour.
